Coney Island Polar Bear Swim: Jan 1st, 2009
This was one COLD/FRIGID day! About 20 degrees, strong winds making it about ZERO wind/chill; water temperature 40 degrees. The rocks on the jetties had thick sheets of ice on them! A few thousand brave souls (many with the apparent assistance of various forms of alcohol) took the plunge. NYPD Rescue Boats offshore, along with numerous lifeguards on land. This was a typical, rowdy, joyous, loud, Coney Island event that could only take place in this historic location. I even spotted a few Mermaids from the Mermaid Day Parade!
